9:15am 13/07/05Woke up, pre-breakfast
Weetabix. Todays todo list: Walk dogs, Return library books, Pay in
cheque at bank, phone Hospital, have breakfast at IHOP.... and ermm...
give birth to first child.
10:45am Got to phone hospital at 11am, bags packed, dogs walked... scheduled for 12pm admission, both bit nervous...
11:00am Phoned hospital - still no room at the inn! Estimated 2-3 hour delay, will call back...
2:30pm Hospital called, we're on...
5:00pm Some initial confusion of which
room we are supposed to be in? (DON'T SIT DOWN, yes matron!). Mindy
wants to go home, connected to the machine that goes bing. IV access
installed - errhh... Baby is very active, I think he knows whats
coming...
5:20pm 1st dose of induction, both going to try and rest for a bit - have to wait 4hrs and see if anything is happening...

7:00pm Bite the sweet not your cheek -
top advice from Mindy. Back in bed on the monitors now, the bubbles in
the tube not done any damage... Not a lot happening... Dinner smells
bad... mmmm... sock juice soup by the smell of it.
10:00pm Second tablet to get things
started at 9pm, Pete gone home to feed and walk da dogs. Nothing much
happening yet... very interesting web log - yeah right...
11:30pm Contractions started about an
hour ago... drugs are starting to start. Going to wander around the
halls for a bit to ease the pain.

We 3 Come on baby everything is much more exciting outside!!!
3:25am 14/07/05 Contractions kicked into
high gear about 12am, by 1am (and 1.5cm) tried sleeping aid + some
narcs; contractions got much more intense. Struggled on to 3am (and 3cm
now!), poor Mindy in a lot of pain, finally opted for the epi-d.
Everything much nicer now, all the other drugs kicking in - mellow
man!. Going to try for a few hours shut eye. love Pete and Mindy.

3:35am Little "D" is awake and punching the sensors - hope to get some rest.

7:55am Both awake after "sleep". Mindy
feeling much better after the 1 minute contractions every 1 minute! Now
after some sleep settled into more regular pattern. Waiting to see our
doctor this morning find out how far along we are. Mindy acquiring more
tubes and more expensive looking equipment by the hour. Scare in the
night when the monitoring alarm when off, but just need the sensors
re-adjusted due to dropping blood pressure (result of all the drugs).
Tried but determined. Pete and Mindy.

9:00am Pete gone home to sort out the
dogs, Zoe found my beef jerky I forgot last night... trail of wrapper
& debris all around the house - fortunetly they had the sense not
eat the silica gel...

10:50am Mindy nil by mouth - pete is big
b*stard just ate Maccie D's hash brown in front of her. Waters broke at
9:30am (artifically) - increasing oxyticon and getting good
contractions now. Not much change from overnight, ETA is still 9-12hrs
away (!) Baby doing fine.

1:00pm Good progress (4cm) -
contractions every 2-3 minutes nice and strong. Nurse is upping the
induction every 20mins or so. Baby doing well. Playing "You don't know
jack" to help pass the time. Mindy getting some feeling back in her
legs, bit sleepy still. Thank you to everyone for your words of
encouragement, it much appreciated. Love Mindy & Pete.
Gadgets! Mindy is accruing an ever
increasing number of drips and machines - certainly getting our money's
worth our of the insurance company. Drips for this and sensors that,
all over the place! The most important machine one of course is the
laptop!!!
Mummy 1 and 2 Baby may not be French after all. Cross off Guillaume, Etienne, Michel and Serge.

1:45pm All going well, solid contractions for 40-60s every 2 minutes. Mindy trying to catch a few zzz's....
2:15pm Back the ranch - Zoe and Harry both fed up, can't believe Mindy's puppy is taking so long.
3:15pm Everygood progress indeed... (8cm) - Baby wants to be born today methinks. Mindy trying to rest for the main event...

5:25pm Big thunderstorm here - took out
the phone lines, but has not encouraged baby to move further on. We've
stopped pushing for a bit and letting him slide for bit, going to

We 3 OI OI, Nice one!!! There's nothing
quite like that surreal calm, 22 hrs you both must be exhausted, bet
you sleep for all of about 20 minutes before you come to and embrace
the miracle thats just occured.

both doing well. Going to be discharged from the hospital today.
Yesterday baby had first visitors Kat, Georgia and Brian came over to
see us at the hospital. Many thanks to everyone for the messages of
support and encouragement, it means so much to us being so far away
from family and friends. All our best Douglus, Mindy and Pete.

PHEW! Have just read thru the blog
properly having heard it in snippets (in between trying not to swear in
case the nurse was a Baptist and pretending to be brave). Can't thank
everyone enough for all the encouragement, it helped me and Pete more
that you know. We had an excellent Doctor whose stoicism during
Douglas's delivery made it bearable when I felt like giving up, he
really was/ is an inspiration. (I'm pretty grateful to the anaesthetist
too. I should have got his number...) Anyhow, labour is no fun and I
don't believe I have ever thanked my mum, so Thank you my Mum and
whilst we're on the subject thanks to all the other Mums, and to all
the Dads who got as involved as Pete did, he was just superb and I love
him and Baby Douglas more than I think should be possible. Am home now,
still a bit shell-shocked but thanking my lucky stars for where I am
right now. Thanks so much again to everyone, can't wait to see/ speak
to/ email you. Love Mindy xx
